In conjunction with Wenham Museum’s current Ox-Cart Man exhibit, Donald Hall’s picture book Lucy’s Christmas will serve as the framework for a workshop exploring what it would have been like to be a girl living in rural New England in 1909.

Discuss Christmas gift traditions, especially hand-made presents that reuse household materials as compared with store-bought items.  Make a clothespin doll. Discuss home life, especially stoves for heating and cooking, using a facsimile Sears Catalogue that includes the Glenwood Kitchen Range.  (Possible use of museum toy stove.) Compare shopping for a new appliance then and now. Discuss school life then and now, especially penmanship.  Practice writing with a steel pen and ink, and then create a Christmas card from period scrap reproductions. Play games described in the book, including dominoes and tiddlywinks. Examine period board games from the museum.
